Posted by Mike on Thursday, September 9th, 2004 @ 06:55 pm [Book Items]
The book, Wi-Fi Toys, is part of the ExtremeTech series of books from ZiffDavis and Wiley Piblishing that include other titles like, Project Arcade, Lan Party, Linux Toys, and Hacking Tivo.

Read the chapter on how to build a cantenna from this adaptation of Chapter 3 - Building a Directional Tin Can Antenna featured on the ExtremeTech website.

The adaptation shows the pics and text from the book in a nice online layout. It covers the following topics:
# Understanding waveguides
# Finding and preparing the can
# Building the radiating element
# Constructing the can antenna
# Using antenna simulation software

Give it a read and leave a comment here or discuss it on the ExtremeTech site!

Hi, I'm building the Can antenna ... this reminds me of the OLD Popular Electronics magazine.... :) Is the wedge tolerance that critical ? I mean that a piece of metal .04 x .24 x .94 inches seems pretty small to cut. I'm using a unusual metal for the wedge you might be interested in. While I was thinking about your article in extreme tech, I took apart one of those anti theft sensors that are attached to electronic devices like at Best Buy and fount 2 perfect pieces of sheet metal inside measuring 1.5 x .25"..... and since they also work on about the same frequency, I figured what a great wedge it would make (even cut to almost the size needed)... I'll let you know how it works out... I'll have it done today if you would like to know.... just reply to this email. I'll be buying the book this weekend.... this has put the geek back into me again... thx... :)
